New Phones

We’ve had our cell phones for 3 years. They are so old they have ‘Cingular’ stamped all over them. The LG 300 has been a good phone for us. It’s had great reliability, we’ve each dropped our phones a few times and everything still worked pretty well (except my 7 key stopped working very well). But texting was a pain, and everybody now texts us instead of calls, and there comes a time when you just need a new phone.

I had looked around a lot for the last several months thinking about my various options. I like some of the features of the iphone, but I hate Apple, I think they are one of the dirtiest companies around and everyone is so blinded by their fanatical following it’s rather scary. So I wanted something similar, but preferrably by a different company. The new Palm phone looks fantastic, but A. I don’t want to wait that long, and B. I will never have a cell phone on Sprint. So, instead I’ve been looking at the Samsung Eternity. I’ve read all the reviews and liked what I saw. So with that in mind I went into the store and tried it out.

It was great, and I really liked it. I could definitely see myself with it. But sitting next to it was the newer Samsung Impression, and boy did that leave an impression. The screen (touch screen) is a new organic led. It’s the first of it’s kind in America, and it’s brighter and clearer than any previous screen technology. It was beautiful! It also uses only a fraction of the energy as traditional screens, meaning the battery lasts much longer. It also has a slide out keyboard, incase you prefer to type on actual buttons instead of a touch-screen. It plays music and video, has tv, gps navigation (extra fee) a 3.0 megapixel camera and a lot more.

I haven’t been using it much, I’m waiting for my Invisible Shield by Zagg to come in (another great product that you should check out). But so far I’ve been very impressed. Battery life has been very good, the widgets have been fun, I’ve been able to use the internet, and text life never before. A very good product.

Grades are in… 3.7 GPA

Just a quick note, I got my grades for BYU’s Winter Semester, and I pulled out a 3.7 GPA. I’m really grateful because it has been a long difficult semester, and I’m really glad to have it over. Of course the only way I’m able to complete these semesters at all is thanks to the loving support by my wife. She’s amazing!

Sara's New Dress

Finding a dress is very difficult for me. I have seriously searched for years to find dresses, but I can just never find one. Last year I finally found a dress! Which put my dress count up to 2 (one of those being my wedding dress.)

I went shopping with my mom a few weeks back to try to find more dresses. We spent hours shopping and although we had fun, I found nothing. So we decided to stop at JoAnn's and I picked out a pattern and some fabric and decided to let my mom just make me one.

My mom is very busy, so she has been working on the dress whenever she found a spare minute. Then a couple weeks back I went shopping with my sister-in-law Lindsey. I was shocked when I found not 1, but 2 dresses! It was awesome.

I went in to work today and sitting on my chair was my completed dress by my mom. She works with me, in case you are wondering why she took it to my work! So I came home, tried it on, and I love it! She did such an amazing job. She always claims she's "not that good" and could "be better". SHE'S AWESOME!! Seriously, I love her so much. I love you mom!

Here is the new dress (Princess is trying to take a look up my dress, silly girl):

Princess is very excited to get her picture taken with me. I think she was upset she didn't get a matching dress for herself. Next time, Princess.

So now I have 4 dresses! That's one for every Sunday of the month! Unless there is 5 Sundays in a month. I guess I just have to take that day off. ;)

Scan Team Party

Sara found out that Yvette had never eaten at Wingers, so of course she immediately called “Scan Team Party!” and got all of her coworkers to go have dinner there. Now, since this is the scan team, every one was super excited to do it, and then almost all of them cancelled. Luckily my sister, Lindsey, made it to round out the table.

Scan Team Party 002 At this point it is quite possible that someone has made a rude bodily function.

The Hunger Games

So I am a huge fan of Twilight. I check Stephenie Meyer's website a couple times a week to see if anything new has come up. A few months back she mentioned a book called The Hunger Games which she loved and couldn't put down. So when my mom asked what I wanted for my birthday, I told her about this book. Of course my mom got it for me (cuz she's awesome), but I haven't had a chance to read it until now.

I think it took me a whole 5 days to read. I loved it! The story is great and so is the writing. It's about 24 teenagers thrown in to an arena and have to fight to survive. The last one alive wins. It's a wonderful story and I don't want to give too much away. I loved the characters; I sincerely fell in the love with them. When I got to the end, I was excited when it said "End of Book 1". That means there are more! The second one comes out in September.

So if you want a good read, check this book out. You'll find it in the Young Adult section at your local bookstore. Unless you live in Eagle Mountain and you have to drive 40 minutes to get to a freakin' book store (but not for long!), which makes it not so local.

School’s out for Summer

I wish I could say ‘School’s out for-evah!’ but I’m sorry Alice Cooper, I’ll have to go back in the fall. In the meantime, I sure am glad to be done with yet another year. I’m working on my 23rd year of BYU. With a mere 15 more to go.

I thought about giving a review of my teachers and classes, but then prudence struck, and I realized that I should wait until after my grades have been turned in, to avoid any unfortunate effects.

But actually, the classes I took this year were great, I had teachers who were both passionate about their subject matter and had a desire to see their students learn. Besides, it’s BYU!

I look forward to being able to spend evenings with my wife … without a laptop in front of me working on a paper or an assignment.

May = Crazy

So I was sitting down planning my May, and holy crap do we have a lot going on! This is Sara, by the way...ya, I know, I NEVER post. It's usually cuz I have no idea what to talk about. My life seems to be the same old thing. Go to work, come home, watch TV, go to sleep, rinse and repeat. But there should be a lot of blogs coming soon seeing as our May is jam packed. Here is a list of our activities in May:

1. My sister-in-laws graduation
2. Chad's birthday
2a. 8 other family member's birthdays (at least, the ones I can think of off the top of my head)
3. Mine and Chad's 5th Anniversary (Yay!)
4. Chad's friend Casey's wedding (in Arizona...yay for warm weather and In-N-Out!)
5. Our Niece's wedding
6. Paramore/No Doubt concert (I know Paramore is opening for No Doubt, but I'm way more excited to see Paramore!)
7. Taylor Swift concert
8. Mother's Day
9. Relief Society Lesson (some where between the madness of this month, I need to plan this!)
10. American Idol Finale (Yes, it's that important) ... Plus a lot of other finales, I'm sure.
11. A big project for work due at the end of the month.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something. There is just so much.

I'll leave you with some uplifting videos that have absolutely nothing to do with what I just wrote. They are some spoofs from the Twilight movie. I love Twilight, but these are way funny!

Living in the Pride Cycle

When I was younger, there was always one thing that was tough for me to understand in the Book of Mormon. It was the Pride Cycle. For those of you who may not know what the Pride Cycle is, it’s the idea that mankind follows a certain pattern. First they are humble, which leads to righteousness. When the people are righteous the Lord blesses them and they prosper. After enjoying prosperity, the people become prideful and arrogant (wickedness). The Spirit is grieved, blessings are removed and pain, destruction, war and all manner of badness occurs. The difficulties force the people into humility, which starts the cycle over again. Here is a diagram of the process…

Pride Cycle

I didn’t have difficulty believing in the cycle, it’s a logical cycle and clearly evident. What I had trouble understanding was just how quickly the cycle would go around. You can often see one generation be humble and blessed and their children being prideful and evil. Sometimes it’s the same people who do the whole cycle!

I always felt that the humble parents would lead a humble generation of children, who in turn would lead wonderful children and on and on, until a few generations later, they start to think, ‘hey, we are pretty hot stuff here… lets forget God!’

I no longer have any difficulty believing that anymore. I look at the humility and hard working nature of our grandparents who either (depending upon our age) came through the Great Depression or WWII. How are parents survived the disastrous Jimmy Carter presidency and recession. All that hard work lead to a booming 90s and after a blip with the tech bubble, a pretty hoping 2000s. And now I look at how prideful we had/have become… especially in the mid 2000s and the general wickedness in the world that has arisen from that, like…

  • Divorces on the rise
  • Teen pregnancies on the rise
  • Mocking of abstinence programs
  • Easing the abilities to get abortions
  • Extending the dates on when you can get abortions (do you realize there are people in power right now that believe you should be able to have an abortion up to a month or more after you’ve given birth?)
  • Vehement attacks against anything that suggests there is a higher power in public places (groups fighting to not allow the highway patrol to use crosses to mark their fallen comrades, 10 commandments in courts, nativity scenes are not allowed anywhere!)
  • The fight to legalize drugs
  • The fight to end the war on drugs entirely
  • Contemplating absurd and possibly irreversible measures in order to fix a “problem” that may only be a problem because it is based on shady science (There are some who are suggesting shooting reflective particles into the air in order to reflect the sun’s rays and heat from reaching the Earth in order to stop global warming)
  • Loss of innocence among our children
  • and so on and on and on…

I was at dinner the other day and the man sitting behind me claimed that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints had transformed from being the true church to nothing more than a big beaurocratic set of rules and regulations. I’ve heard this many times before, from friends, from family, from people I hardly know. In almost every single case, it’s because they have become caught up in some activity or habit that is against one of those rules. It could be alcohol, pornography, R-rated movies, not shopping on Sunday, etc. It really doesn’t matter what it is, but once they find themselves on the other side of an issue, rather than admit that they were wrong it is far easier to justify their action and accuse the accuser of being in the wrong.

The man’s proof that the Church had gone astray? Joseph Smith received many revelations, including scripture. Today the church is not receiving revelation. ‘When was the last time the Church received revelation?’ he asked. I didn’t speak to him, his heart was already hardened. His companion did try to half heartedly defend the Church, but was easily cowed by his unbelieving friend in his too loud voice so that everyone would know how he didn’t believe.

I feel badly for him, because this is a day in which the church receives a great deal of revelation. Perhaps the Church is not putting out new books to join the Bible and the Book of Mormon, but why should they until we have learned to live by the tenets that are laid out before us now? We were warned several times before the economic crunch to have our houses in order, that the 7 years of feast were coming to an end. Conference just a few weeks ago was a smorgasbord of information for those who had ears to hear. And one of the most powerful pieces of written prophesy ever written was released on September 23, 1995. It reads:

The Family: A Proclamation to the World

The First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

We, the First Presidency and the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, solemnly proclaim that marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children.

All human beings—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan by which His children could obtain a physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life. The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.

The first commandment that God gave to Adam and Eve pertained to their potential for parenthood as husband and wife. We declare that God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force. We further declare that God has commanded that the sacred powers of procreation are to be employed only between man and woman, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

We declare the means by which mortal life is created to be divinely appointed. We affirm the sanctity of life and of its importance in God's eternal plan.

Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. "Children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psalms 127:3). Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another, to observe the commandments of God and to be law-abiding citizens wherever they live. Husbands and wives—mothers and fathers—will be held accountable before God for the discharge of these obligations.

The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan. Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity. Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities. By divine design, fathers are to preside over their families in love and righteousness and are responsible to provide the necessities of life and protection for their families. Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners. Disability, death, or other circumstances may necessitate individual adaptation. Extended families should lend support when needed.

We warn that individuals who violate covenants of chastity, who abuse spouse or offspring, or who fail to fulfill family responsibilities will one day stand accountable before God. Further, we warn that the disintegration of the family will bring upon individuals, communities, and nations the calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets.

We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society.

This proclamation was read by President Gordon B. Hinckley as part of his message at the General Relief Society Meeting held September 23, 1995, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The official document is here.

These warnings are real, we are already seeing them in action.

I have thought a lot lately about where I want to be on the Pride Cycle, and I realized that I was on the opposite end. It takes a lot of work to to skip from the prideful side to the humble side, but it is worth it.

I hope this will have helped someone out there. If nothing else though, I believe it will be a powerful tool for me and my family.

American Idol Review

Sara told me today that this weeks theme was going to be @ the movies. I immediately knew that this was going to be one of the worst weeks of the season. Was I disappointed?

Alison - Sweet Surrender
I just don't get her. Not my style. Sounds very mannish. The look is absolutely atrocious.

Anoop - Everything I Do (I Do It For You)
One of my favorite songs as a young person. Anoop just lacks the depth of voice to make it work.
Those eyebrows just have to go.

Adam Lambert - Born to Be Wild
No. No. No.
Rocky Horror Picture show is exactly right. I want a singing competition, not a musical theatre competition.

Matt Giraurd - Have you Ever Really Loved A Woman
An alright performance, but not something I would call good. It was just kind of there. There were some pretty rough spots where he was going all over the place. Not impressed
Even the crowd didn't disagree that the song was rough.

Danny Gokey - Endless Love
He has a great deal of vocal talent, like Adam, but minus the theatrics, which is nice. I can't help but feel like every week is meant to subtly remind us that he lost his wife. I hope thats just because she is such an important part of his life, and not a crafty way to get sympathy. This was the best performance so far.

Kris - I didn't catch the name of the song
A very nice performance. But it just felt a little boring. I never connected with it. This season lacks a true crooner, and the closest thing we have is probably Kris.

Lil Rounds - Rose
She's still on this show?
Another week, another weak performance. Please, please, please America put her out of my misery this week.

Who will go home this week? I think all of them should! Honestly, no one really stepped it up and knocked it out of the park. This has definitely turned into one of the more pathetic seasons. Not as bad as season 3, which didn't have 1 single contestant who would have made it into the top 36 last year, but still very uninspiring.

The Tale of Friday

Friday was a very interesting day for us. First off, of course, it was Ellie’s birthday, and we were going to go to her (and Aaron’s, whose birthday was on Thursday) birthday party. But before the party, Aaron went over to our house while we were at work to put together Ellie’s present, a brand new Princess Bike, which we had let them store in our basement until her birthday.

When we got home, Aaron was just leaving. We went inside and looked for Princess Buttercup, but we couldn’t find her anywhere. We looked upstairs and downstairs and outside. We called and called her, with absolutely no answer. I was starting to worry that she had gotten out so I called Aaron. He said that he had had to force Princess from getting outside and then she had run under our bed, and she had not come out from there.

I went into the bedroom, calling Princesses name, and there was still nothing. I got down and looked under the bed and saw her. Her eyes were glossed over, her ears were pinned back on her head and her mouth was wide open with no sound coming out of it. And then a terrible hiss and moan came from under the bed. Sara, on the other side of the bed thought that another cat had gotten in and was also under the bed, because it sounded nothing like Princess.

I pulled the bed out of the way and looked at our poor little kitten, who was literally blind with fear. I reached down for her and she hissed and moaned again. She did not want to be touched. We talked to her, trying to calm her down, but she was having none of it. I finally got her some kitty treats and as she slowly ate them, she slowly returned to herself. When she finally recognized us enough to let me pick her up, I did. She was still really nervous, but she at least knew it was me. Unfortunately we had to give her a quick wash in the tub (a great thing to have to do to a cat who is already freaked out) but she was so scared she had literally been scared poopless and had gone to the bathroom on herself.

After that, we went to Aaron and Ellie’s birthday party, which was a lot of fun. And thankfully Princess has been Okay ever since then. But I think we’ve learned what will happen if anyone ever breaks into our house while we’re not there. Princess will have panic attacks under the bed. But, at least she’ll be absolutely silent unless someone tries to pick her up. And we’ve learned our lesson, no more people over at the house when we’re not there.

Now for the pictures…

Priesthood Session, General Conference

My brother-in-law, Aaron, called me at about 3:00pm on Saturday to let me know that he had an extra ticket to that night’s Priesthood Session, and if I wanted to go, I could. Uhh, duh. I’ve never been to the Conference Center, even on a tour, so I jumped at the chance to go.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with General Conference, it’s a twice-yearly event held by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, in which many of the leaders of the Church speak to us, including the Prophet’s and Apostles! It’s a truly fantastic spiritual event, and if you’ve never listened before, I suggest you give it a try.

On the way, I also got to try some other firsts. Yes, I rode Trax for the first time. Maybe I’m the last one in Utah to ride it, but I did!

Here are the pictures… as always bigger pictures await your click.

Shipping Done Right

Since I complained about Borders & FedEx shipping the other day (read the story), I thought I had better show another example when shipping is done right.

I am a technical guy, I buy stuff for computers, put them together myself, help friends and family with their own computers, and as such, I'm always looking for a deal on good quality tech toys. So of course I frequent NewEgg quite often.

Wednesday they had a great deal on the Acer H233h. It's a 23" widescreen LCD monitor. It's very nice because it accepts VGA, DVI, and HDMI inputs. It's very nice. I bought it on Wednesday, paid for standard shipping (which was much cheaper than Border's shipping, and it's certainly a much bigger and heavier item). When we got home today, Friday, the package was already on our porch. Both items originated in California and had the same distance to travel, but a single DVD took almost 2 weeks longer to arrive.

NewEgg has great shipping options, and I highly recommend them if you are in need of buying technical items!

Miley Cyrus, Superfan!

I am Miley Cyrus’ biggest fan. I can’t help but love everything about her, from that crooked smile to those big doe eyes. She is the complete package, she sings, she acts, she appears inappropriately dressed (undressed?) on magazines way too young.

I thought I had hid my obsession pretty well, until  I came in to work today and saw that people had found out. Here’s the pictures…

Now, obviously (hopefully this is obvious) this is a April Fools Day prank that someone has played on me, what I can’t figure out though is what is worse, this, or the fact that someone actually had this stuff, or went and got it. That to me is very creepy.
